Notes: Made for waywardmixes's 17th challenge: minor characters. I tried not to make this into a shippy mix, but it's kind of hard with a character who's described as half of a pair. I just have so many Grantaire feels. Totally rushed the cover but I have an exam that's taking over my life, so I'm just happy I have something to submit this month. Luckily I had several Les Mis mixes in the works. Because Les Mis. Sighs.

About Grantaire is a member of Les Amis de l'ABC, an association of revolutionary French republican students. He is a cynic and a skeptic and does not believe in the cause that the Amis fight for. Grantaire's bleak outlook on life leads him to be constantly drunk, and he's described in the book as impossibly ugly. This detail is ignored by every casting director ever. Despite this, Grantaire is accepted by the Amis because of his good humour and friendliness. He's got a vast knowledge of literature and philosophy, about which he can ramble at length, and he knows all the best places to go to in Paris. He's a boxer, gymnast, dancer, fencer, and he studied painting when he was younger. The only reason Grantaire is involved with the group is because he admires and idolizes their leader, Enjolras, a man who's described as Grantaire's total opposite. Enjolras is passionate and idealistic, and Grantaire feels attracted to those qualities that he himself lacks. Enjolras is disdainful of Grantaire because of his skepticism and constant drunkness and because that one time he sent Grantaire on an errand for the revolutionary cause, Grantaire ended up playing dominoes instead, and so he treats him harshly. However Grantaire is never discouraged. He's generally loud and theatrical in his mannerisms but speaks softly to Enjolras, claiming he'd do everything for him. During the June Rebellion, Enjolras leads the Amis and other student societies into building barricades in the streets. Grantaire is the only one who don't believe the rebellion will succeed, but he still decides to follow Enjolras and fights alongside his friends. In the book, Enjolras scorns him for dishonouring the barricade with his presence and so Grantaire drinks himself into a stupor and misses most of the fighting. The soldiers take the barricade and Grantaire wakes up as Enjolras is about to be executed. Grantaire loudly claims he's a republican too, therefore condemning himself to death, and then asks Enjolras for permission to die by his side. Enjolras smiles at him and offers him his hand and they're shot where they stand. Those are not tears it's raining on my face.

Great mix! Les Mis is definitely a novel where the minor characters becomes more interesting than the main ones at times!
