waywardmixes's fourth challenge: groups. I would have loved to include other companions, especially Jack and Rory, but due to time constraints I limited myself to the four main ones. There's three songs for each companion: about them, and about the incarnation of the Doctor that they traveled with, and about their relationship with the Doctor. There's also three generic songs about the Doctor and his companions. Huge spoilers for the first five seasons in the series summary, though they're all behind a spoiler cut.
Doctor Who, starting in 1963, is one of the oldest British TV shows. It chronicles the adventures of a mysterious individual known only as the Doctor, a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels through time and space. His ship, the TARDIS, has the outward appearance of a blue police box but is much bigger on the inside. The Doctor is usually accompanied by one or more companions, often females.
The Doctor doesn't like violence but at the same time he's responsible for many deaths, especially because of his involvement in the Last Great Time War between Time Lords and Daleks, which he ended by (almost) completely obliterating both races. To hide the leftover emotional trauma he acts in a playful and sometimes downright silly manner, though he becomes ruthless if events demand it.
If a Time Lord is ill or injured, he or she can heal himself through a process called regeneration, replacing decayed and damaged cells with new ones. The Doctor has gone through this process several times, each time ending up with a different appearance and personality, even though fundamentally he's still the same person. The new Doctor Who series (2005), starts when the Doctor is in his ninth incarnation.
Rose Tyler, the defender of the Earth. She's brave and kind and has a great sense of humour. She's never traveled anywhere before the Doctor plummeted into her life but she is quick to adapt to strange events. She cares deeply for the Doctor but, like him, she's willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good. To seal an army of Daleks and Cybermen away from her world, she becomes trapped in a parallel universe that the Doctor can't reach. The Doctor tries to say goodbye and Rose tells him that she loves him, but his answer is cut off.
Martha Jones, the medical doctor. Once she spent an entire year walking the Earth to ensure that everyone knew the Doctor's name, in an effort to put an end to the Master's tyrannical dominion of the planet. She falls in love with the Doctor, but he's still hung up on Rose and doesn't return her affections. Because of this she decides to leave, and she's one of the few companions who parted ways with the Doctor of their own accord. She ends up as a freelance defender of the Earth, fighting off alien invasions with her husband.
Donna Noble, the most important woman in all of creation. She has a sharp tongue and a short temper, constantly haranguing the Doctor for his silliness and calling him Spaceman. Although she refers to herself as "just a temp from Chiswick", she's very smart and perceptive and witty. She's a compassionate woman, often appealing to the Doctor's better side and acting as his conscience. Donna saves the whole of reality from the Daleks by becoming part-Time Lord, but the stress caused by her transformation into the DoctorDonna is too much for her human body. Her memories of her time with the Doctor have to be erased and she's returned to Earth.
Amy Pond, the girl who waited. She meets the Doctor when she's little, an orphan Scottish girl living in an English village. The Doctor promises that he'll take her with him and she waits for twelve years until he comes back to make good on that promise. She has a difficult childhood because nobody believes her story about a "raggedy doctor" falling from the sky, so she's stubborn and cynical. She holds people she cares about at arm's length, but she cares deeply for them and she can be ruthless with enemies of her friends and family. Amy is much more feisty and outspoken than other companions, openly flirting with the Doctor, although she considers him his best friend and is faithful to her boyfriend (and later husband) Rory Williams.
